Manure in next year's carrot bed?

    Manure in next year's carrot bed?

    Hi,

    I got some well rotted horse manure to spread over my allotment beds over winter - i was just wondering if i should exclude any beds, particularly any that i plan to use for carrots next year? Would green maunure or even nothing be a better option for these? Or will the horse manure have rotted down so much by spring that it won't affect carrot growth adversely?

    I personally would not manure before planting carrots, just a small amount of general fertilizer.

      No manure for root crops. As Potty said, just some general fertiliser raked in just before you sow.

        A dug a little trench last year and filled with manure and left it open during the winter, Early this year i built up some little mounds and planted onions. They did quite well.

        Was that wrong? Was i lucky?

          Manure is fine for onions - they're not a root crop

            Onions aren't carrots, they need lots of food.

                  Carrots are supposed to grow best in poor soil, even sand. Definitely you don't need to feed them.

                  A green manure could be utilised to take nutrients out of the carrots' soil: grow the green manure now to mop up the nutrients, then remove it from the carrot bed (put it on something that likes nitrogen, eg. brassicas)
