In one raised bed which is next to a fence I grow them in a long row and fix plastic mesh/netting to the fence so they cling onto it as they go. Otherwise I use pea sticks (twiggy prunings from various fruit trees and shrubs that I save along the way). Those methods seem to work most of the time but for the Lancashire Lad pea variety that reaches almost 6 feet I usually grow them against a fixed trellis. I tried with a homemade bamboo support system but it just kept collapsing under the weight.

I grow the taller ones up wigwams of canes with woven willow at intervals. The shorter ones (Kent Blue for instance) I grow against the stiff plastic netting you can buy, with canes threaded through at intervals to go into the ground.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

I grow mine very close together in containers, and use twigs dug in at angles for support. They don't need to be very high, but this has worked really well for me.Comment
