I need to make a raised bed which will hold lettuce, corn, toms and chilli. The toms and chilli I know will be fine around 6" deep but not sure about the corn so I don't really know the cheapest or free way of doing a bed maybe 4x4. I thought about getting some cheap garden plastic edging which was 6" high... I don't have any decent spare wooden panels unless I used some I have which are only 2" deep.

Old pallets are your best bet.
Leave the blocks at the ends two pieces so you have 2 ._. pieces then use 2 pieces clean (without any nails or blocks) to join them both together.
The height of the panels are generally about 100mm so just short of the 6 inches you want. So make 2 sets then join them together.
I'm not the best at explaining so just look on google or youtube for making rasied beds from pallets, there are lots of guides.
As for getting the pallets local businesses and skips should have more then enough spare.Comment

I've grown chillies and toms outside since 2009 but only pop them out in may or June.

All you need to make a raised bed is a lump of earth that's higher than the surrounding earth/grass/floor
What you could do is dig a spades width of earth out around whatever area you want to grow in, turn that over, then dig the center, and remove any large roots and perennial weeds. You'll end up with a raised middle anyway because once you fluff earth up it won't be as compacted as the rest, hence the raised bit.
It also only costs you spade, not anything else [unless you can skiphunt it] and if you like it where it is, put a barrier round it next year.Last edited by taff; 14-03-2013, 03:41 PM.Comment

Raised bed on the budget each bed is 2.8m x 1.3m cost me £5.99 each for the lawn edging 10m long 16.5 cm high, plus postage £4.95
No nails or screw required, only sticks, pruner and hammer. Cheap and chearful, not sure how long it will last but I am happy to redo it in several years same way if necessary.Comment

I have been thinking the same here just to grow my salad vegetables in and do the square meter method
I was thinking of getting 4 lots of wood at least 6 inches high for each side and putting them together then filling them up.
