  • Main Crop Tatties

    Hi guys

I read that early potatoes should be in the ground for at least 3 months before they're ready. Does this apply to maincrop too or do they need to be in there longer?

    Cheers

Lots of threads on this here..................
Earlies 12 weeks, second earlies 15 weeks and maincrop 20 weeks (or thereabouts - someone will correct me if i'm wrong!)

Right, thank you for that. Can't actually remember the date I put them in so will have to hazard a guess.

A good guide is to wait till they flower and the haulms start to hellow and die off.

Wait until the plants themselves start to go yellow, wither and die back. Then cut the stalks (haulms) down and leave the spuds in the ground for a bit longer so that the skins can thicken so that they store better.
