  • maggots inside the leaves...!

    hi,

today i made a discovery of little maggots inside the leaves of my veg. ive just found them on beetroot, swiss card and perpetual spinach leaves. first light browny dry patches appear on the leaves. ( i thought perhaps they had been scorched in the sun) however with closer inspection i discovered when i tore off part of the dry leaf that there was a yellow maggot/grub inside the leaf. it was eating the leaf from the inside ! ive not heard of this before. does anyone know what it is?

Beet leaf miner probably. Looks a lot worse than it is, just rub off any eggs on the back of the leaves as you see them and squash the grubs already in the leaves. Grow them in a different part of the garden next year and leave where they've been this time uncovered in spring and loosen the top of the soil so the birds will eat the pupae which stay in the ground over winter.
