  • Maggots in courgette seedlings and seeds.

Germination has been poor in the courgette pots this year, and some have thrown up just the seedlings leaves and then stalled. Investigation has revealed small white maggots (3-4mm) in the heart where the true leaves should be appearing, plus also in the ungerminated seeds. This is a new one to me.

The seeds are a mix of new and old.
The compost is a mix of nasty and decent MPC, both bags are new.
The pots have been outside when it is warm and sunny and inside at night.
Everything else (so far) is fine.

I'll sow some more once the weather turns warm again next week, but just wondered if anyone else had come across this. I'm assuming that a rogue fly has laid her eggs on the surface of the pot when it was outside.

I have had issues in the past with fungus gnats and seedlings indoors

That would be my thoughts exactly. Fungus gnats prefer damper conditions so leaving things drier can help. They will obligingly drown themselves in little trays ( milk bottle lids) of almond oil.
