  • Low plants for growbags

I've managed (well my husband has!) to fit two rows of grow bags on either side of the new greenhouse (we are going to do it properly with soil next year but the greenhouse has only just gone up and I wanted to get some things growing this year). At the back (ie nearer the sides I am putting the taller plants that need staking (tomatoes, peppers, aubergines) but I am hoping I can put something lower in the front grow bags so that we will still be able to reach the back plants. Apart from lettuce and other salad leaves (although maybe they should be outside?) are there any suggestions? I thought I might put basil in one hole but don't really have any other thoughts. (We have fitted in 4 pairs of grow bags so have 12 growing holes (not sure if they have a proper name) at the front. Any suggestions welcome (have just found these forums after my mum bought me the magazine last month and I think it is great that so many people are willing to share their knowledge).

I wouldn't put lettuce in the greenhouse at this time of year as they prefer cooler conditions and don't mind a bit of shade. Your tomatoes could easily reach the top of the greenhouse if you let them so peppers in front of them would work as they don't get anywhere near that height.

Personally I'd just fill the greenhouse with tomatoes....but I like tomatoes!!

I'd suggest not using grow bags: they're too shallow & dry out superquick in summer. Instead cut them in half and stand them up, so you have 2 half-bags which are about 8" deep, instead of one bag that's 3" deep.

Also, tomatoes get big: there won't be room for anything else in the bag

        Thanks for the advice.

I know grow bags aren't ideal but this year we don't have time to sort proper beds. Next year we will sort them better.

I have reservoir watering things so I think I should be OK.

I have space for two rows of grow bags on each side of the greenhouse so they aren't in the same bag.

I've put melons on one side and courgettes and basil in front of the tomatoes on the other. Still got space for some more stuff though ( three full grow bags of space plus room for a few pots.

I've tried 2 grow bags on top of each other and sunk bottomless 8inch plant pots into bags and put tomatoes plants into pots hoping that water will be retained in pots instead of spreading through bags.ring culture I think it's called. Tomatoes seem to be ok. Can't have soli bottoms in my green house due to it standing on slabs. Does anyone agree it might work.

Cucumbers can get quite tall too, unless you get a small one like Spacemaster.....
Courgettes, on the other hand, whilst not tall, will spread all over the gh, so not ideal....besides, courgettes are fine outside..
