  • lots of green toms how to ripen them?

    Hi everyone,

I have lots of green toms still on my outdoor tom plants if i harvest them and put them in the salard draw of the fridge with a over ripe bannana will this work in the same way as it does with peppers?

    Thanks

I've put whole trusses in a dark cupboard with banana skins, it works, but still takes quite a few days to get any colour change.

Either that or put them on a sunny windowsill, or make green tomato chutney

I put mine in their own fruit bowl and keep in the kitchen if I want them to ripen, those that I want for Green Tom Chutney go into the fridge to slow down the ripening.

I used the banana method a couple of weeks ago and found they turned fairly quickly.

I stuck mine in a draw, no banana and they turned. Last year I did the window sill thing and the skins went a tad hard.

My mum used to use the drawer in a warm room method when I was a child. It was recommended by a family friend called William Pitt the Younger. Worked fine but the evidence is that if you shove some banana skins in, which give off methane, it works even better.

I'd not bother trying to get them to go red, I'd make green tomato mincemeat which is absolutely gorgeous and tastes just like 'real' mincemeat...cant wait to start using it to make mince pies.

next year i'm planning to take them off the plant BEFORE they turn red so i can make more!

Thanks SN - I did a bit of searching and found it where you said - one of the hazards of only going to New Posts is you miss these things. I need to do something with my green toms as I hate bananas so can't ripen them that way!

Have heard of people suspending the plant upside down with its trusses left in position..........never tried it so don't know whether it works or not!
