  • Lime for brassicas

    Hi all
Just wondered what time of year I should be liming the ground for next years brassicas? Is this an autumn job or should it be left to spring time?

    Cheers!

Lime is very fluid in the ground and washes out easily, so if I was adding it I would add it in the springtime. Depends what you're adding it for I suppose?

I think the idea is that you can sprinkle it over the brassica bed just prior to planting/sewing, and I also add a scattering to the planting hole itself.

          I hadn't heard that one?

I understand it is mainly used to prevent clubroot affecting brassic crops.

I also understood it was a preventative for clubroot. I would have thought though, that if your soil is highly alkaline anyway, it wouldn't be necessary?

Spring it is then...it was for the clubroot prevention - we don't have highly alkaline soil.

I haven't previously limed my soil so after reading this I have sprinkled wood ash around the base of my sprouts, hope I have done the right thing.
