Can any one recommend a lettuce for the allotment as a rule I just grow few little gems. But this year I fancy a nice big hearty lettuce that will keep in the fridge for a week supplying sandwiches. Can any one suggest a variety ?

There was a thread recently on the same subject. Some folks liked iceberg (and others did not!)

I use a salad spinner to dry and store lettuce - it keeps for well over a week in those. I grow a mixture of lettuces, but one of the veterans gave me a webbs wonderful - which was massive - last year.

So washing and drying with the spinner makes it last longer in fridge ?
Last year I was standing my little gems in a pot of water in the fridge but not ideal

I grow a mixture, some of the cut n come again variety, if you wash it, and get as much water off as you can, put in plastic bag, it will store n salad compartment at bottom of your fridge for up to a week.

I grow one called Robinson (iceberg) keeps really well in the fridge. If you leave some of the root stork on and sit it in a glass/cup of water most lettuce keep well in the fridge I've found.

Yes, it's an oxo good grips one I think. I'm sure we've kept lettuce for nearly two weeks in it. It does take up a bit of space though so you may prefer the placcie bag method.

Or you could grow CACA lettuce in a planter by your back door, then nip out and take a few leaves when ever you need.

I grow 'Wonder of four seasons', a nice leafy red and 'Attractie', a soft leaf green. Both are nice headed and large leaved and didn't seem to mind me taking outer leaves. I feel it's better to store them in the ground than the fridge and pick as I need for the day(s): leaves in a fridge don't grow any bigger. But I did find that cutting a head and keeping it dry kept it for at least a week (hard to tell if it lasted any longer... eaten by then.) I still have some in the garden now, giving me a few leaves each a week.

I'm always planting another kind of lettuce too or CCA's, checking out what seems to look tasty or sounds appealing. I think that's a great part of quick growing leaves, plant it, try it, don't like it, try another...

I prefer loose leaf lettuce, and I keep a few by the back step for 'emergency' use, just picking off a few outside leaves as I want them: then they regrow
