  • Leggy Brassicas....

Our Cabbage, Brussel Sprout and Cauliflour seedlings have all got very tall very quick, they are in a small shed, lots of light and its not to warm, but they havent grown any leaves yet other than the seedling leaves.

Am I doing something wrong, some look like they are sowly dying.

Try repotting them deeper . Mine are in a mini GH which is left open as a sort of cold frame.

      Hi.
Are they in modules, a tray or pots? If the soil they are in is too shallow, this might contribute to their legginess. You say they are in a shed which has plenty of light, but the main reason things go leggy is due to a lack of light.
I would risk pricking them out into largish modules - handling them only by their seed leaves and bury them up to those leaves.
As to some of them looking like they are slowly dying - Too much water? Not enough? Hard to tell. Brassicas are quite tough so I would suggest that once you have pricked them out you stand them out in a sheltered sunny corner during the day, and put them back in the shed at night. Hope they pick up.

The shed had a brick base, then glass all 4 sides, but the roof is wood. They are in 9cm pots at the moment, 3 seeds per pot, will get them outside everday from now on.

        Thanks for the information

          You're welcome Frogga.
I'd still be tempted to give them their own three inch pot (if you have enough!). They can then stay in there until you're ready to plant them out and if you go with the rest of the plan it should sort the legginess out.

Ok, will be a busy day outdoors tomorrow, lets hope the sun is shining, go to the garden centre for compost then get things outdoors, and sort the seedlings out.

Mine are in loo roll middles. They'll just go straight in the ground then when ready.
