  • Leek or Onion

I've been a bit of a numpty, i've saved some seed heads from some crops this year, but now i cannot remember if they are from leeks or onions. I've not saved seed from either of these before.

Is it possible to tell the difference before I start collecting the seeds from the heads?

Just noticed....no one has replied to you!

Not sure to get honest, I've never let an onion go to seed.

My leek heads are about 3" across if that's any help?

To my eyes they all look the same, save the seed, then grow some on over winter, like chit on some tissue and keep moist, when they get some green leaves on,have a chew test, also crumple a few and smell the difference, what ever they are,if you put em in a small condenced area, and use them as you would a chive plant, hope it makes some sence for you.

Show us a photo of the flower head with something for scale. It may help!

Does it really matter? Just treat them the same.

If you grow some in a pot on the windowsill you will see fairly quickly whether they are leeks or onions. Leeks have dull flat bluish green leaves, onions have shinier rounder and more yellowy green leaves.
