  • Leek advice please

Hi all I have just had these leeks (Northern lights) delivered

Do I just pull them out ad hope the roots are ok or shall I snip them off before taking them out of the pack?

    Thanks

I'd make sure they are really well watered, wet even, and pull out carefully. They will lose some roots but will recover.

Agree with Wendy. I seperate mine in a bowl of water. As the roots need teasing apart.

Drench them, pull them gently apart, dibber a hole 6 to 8 inches deep, snip off wayward roots so they fit in the hole easily.

Cut off top of upper leaves so birds etc. less likely to pull them out and reduce water needs in early day. Don't cut all the leaf off though.

Don't refill the hole with soil; just fill each hole to top with water.

        Wait. Wait. Wait.

Earth up as plant grows if you want blanched leeks.

        Eat.
The proof of the growing is in the eating.
        Leave Rotten Fruit.
        Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potasium - potash.
        Autant de têtes, autant d'avis!!!!!

They are only about 8 inches all together how far should they be dibbed in?

The tops of the leaves should be peeping out of the top of the hole.

Wow that deep? That's maybe why last years leeks still looked exactly the same in February this year!

Good video! I cut roots but only to make sure they fit in the hole snuggly. My soil doesn't produce holes as nice as in that video!!!
