  • just cleared large raised beds...what can i sow / plant now?

    hello,
we have just cleared large raised beds which previously had a mixture of broad beans, potatoes, onions and a few other bits and bobs

so what can we sow / plant now?

happy for it to be for either late summer / autumn, or a full-on winter crop

just looking for some ideas, and also what people really do, rather than what all the Hessayon books tell you (!)

    kind regards,

    nick

Spring cabbage, autumn carrots, salad leaves or green manure in preparation for spring sowing.

Have a look at the What I Did Today thread, but take note of people's location ... what's suitable in Devon won't nec. be for Scotland for eg

Don't think these will work. Potatoes need at least 13 weeks from planting to harvest which takes us to 5th November. Potatoes are normally planted in the open in March/April

              and frost and darkness

(if you plan to grow potatoes now, they need to go under cover when the nights get cold). Xmas spuds are the Holy Grail of gardening)

I've just bought bare rooted leeks ( not seen them in the UK) but you may find a few in pots in a garden centre.

but you usually grow them in tubs so you can put them in the greenhouse when it starts to get cold.

Correct,as it happens about half an hour ago i hurried to get my tub sown ones under cover to protect from possible blight,(started to rain).
