  • JA's

I was given a lovely big bag of JA's the other day and plan to plant some at the lottie. What sounds like a sensible amount to plant for a family of four?
Does anyone have any good growing tips?
    Thanks y'all

JA's have a habit of taking over wherever they are grown so even if you don't plant enough this year, you will be sure to have enough for next year.
I guess how many and how often you want to eat them will determine how many you plant but you can reckon on getting a meal per plant - very roughly. They grow to be very tall (as much as 8 feet) so be aware that they might shade plants grown nearby.
If you look <<HERE>> they (bearing in mind this is in Florida) suggest that you can get 2 to 5 lbs per plant.

      One plant

      (nobody will like them!)

They spread like mad if you leave any in the ground. They also get very tall, so plant them on the north end of your plot so they don't shade everything else out.

It's a Jerusalem Artichoke - a root vegetable that kind of resembles a knobbly potato. If you look at the link I put earlier you can find out a bit about them. And it's true what they say - they do make you f**t!

Had some on my lottie when I took it over - tried them three times and I don't know what the fuss is about. Not the biggest fan!

Well I guess I should actually eat some before I plant them!
Thanks for the advice one and all. x
