  • JA identification

I've never grown jerusalem artichokes before, but back in February I planted a few tubers. Loads of weeds are coming up in the bed and also the plant in the photo. I *think* that it's JA, but wanted to make sure before doing the weeding.

Yup, looks like a JA to me

Does not look like my JA's but could be a different variety. With the spiky bits on the leaves it looks more like a globe artichoke. The leaves on mine are a paler green and have a sort of hairy/furry surface. Still you will find out soon enough when it reaches a height over 6ft. (usually grow to 12/15ft)

Furtle around at the base. If it is a JA it is attached to a lumpy tuber, if it is a weed it is only attached to a root system...with those leaves, anyway. But I reckon that is a JA. (Dashes off to plant his JAs.)

It's definitely not a globe artichoke as I didn't plant any! The JA's I planted were an unnamed variety I bought in my local fruit and veg shop, so it could very well be a different variety than is usually available in gardening catalogues.

But I will have a gentle poke in the earth to see if there's a tuber down there.

J.A's are related to sunflower's, so the leaves look like...well...a sun flower. Have a look at the photo below. If your not sure I'd leave them a little longer before digging them up. But if there in a bed...make sure you dig all the tubers up or it's turn into a weed.

Good grief, GN - if that is your JA bed, then I presume that is a case in point. There are enough roasted JA and JA soup there to feed a small city!
