It's a good idea to keep sowing small amounts of stuff in modules throughout the summer so that you always have something that you can pop into bare soil when it comes available. I've just put out cabbage and swede plants and have sown chard, beetroot and turnips straight into the ground. You could also sow lettuce, spring onions, radishes.

You could think about starting to sow some winter lettuce, although it might be a bit early. We'll be sowing some winter radish in the best few days, if it ever stops raining, as well as some more kohl rabi and florence fennel.

You might still find things like leeks for sale, and some garden centres are starting to sell winter 'greens' - if you're happy to buy in brassicas.

There are a few brassica plant collections available at the moment. Like Solway Cropper says, it's a good idea to keep sowing so that you have small plants in modules to fill any gaps. It would be a good idea to put your location into your profile please so we don't forget where you are.

I always have leeklets growing in a clump ready to transplant to any vacant area, especially as the tatties are lifted. It will soon be time for sowing/planting Japanese onions for overwintering. Spring cabbage could be sown now and broad beans in a short while. Garlic can go in any time of the year. The hard and soft fruit planting season will soon be upon us so give a little thought to them?

Still can't understand why the ground is wet at the TOP of a hill anywhere unless you have drainage problems?

But the laws of physics/gravity says it should permeate DOWNWARDS and leave a boggy bit at the bottom of the hill, not the top?

Thanks for all that, like the modules bit, wouldn't have occurred to me.
Snadger: I put top of hill cos its always soddin raining. Also a local gardener told me we're two weeks behind the town (todmorden) weather wise. But I guess you wouldn't know that. Thanks again. Are there any plants that vaporise slugs on sight? Long shot, I know.
