    Iv'e found the culprit---Onion Problem

    Hi everyone, I think I might have found the culprit.
    I got out my magnifying glass & went exploring, this is what I found.

    Nothing apparent in the bulb or roots, but upon slicing open each leaf I found these little 3mm long pupae, brown in colour as you can see, one still in situ, the other I removed from inside a mature leaf.

    What pest do they belong to, how shall I proceed & do I destroy the entire crop

      have you got a Macro button on your camera (tulip icon?)

        I think you have Allium Leaf Miner there. I have Leek Moth maggots.

        The Leaf Miner maggot doesn't have legs, the Leek Moth maggot does.


        The pupal stage of the leek moth is about 10mm long, and is a cream coloured, silk cocoon; the pupae of the Allium leaf miner are about half this size, and are orange brown in colour

            Two Sheds, don't have a digi camera, did these on my webcam. Here are some more, don't know if they are any clearer. As I said they are pupae 3mm long and found inside the leaves.
            The inside of the leaf had been eaten away and there was a small hole on the outside of the leaves????
            Will try to get some more tomorrow when I go up to the lottie again. What do you think it is.

                hi von ,just noticed your dillemma,,,i have one sounding very similar,i have just had to destroy my entire crop,over winter from sets ,plus everything ive put in this year,i have been finding brown pupa throughout the layers,plus the odd white grub,ive also got pupa in my over winter garlic too,the gentleman on lotment next to me said onion fly,but unsure aving read your comments,look for twisted growth,thats a good indicator of problems,thats what showed on this years,,,good luck,,happy digging

                  Onion fly maggots are in the bulb, not the foliage. Brown pupa? Sounds like allium leaf miner for you too.
