  • intercropping sweetcorn and turnips

    hi everyone
i spaced my sweetcorn out to far apart as my packet gave me wrong instructions (according to the rest of the internet?) so i decided to intercrop, i planted about 8 rows of sweetcorn and ended up with a total of 75 healthy plants, when they were about,,,,, 30cm high i put turnips between three rows of sweetcorn, , i noticed that my turnips grew nice but then slowed down then went ,, well, not very nice looking and i noticed that the surrounding sweetcorn had faded too just where i had planted the turnips though, after about three months of waiting for my turnips i thought they should be done, i have had enough, i thought , they must be using all the enrgy out of the ground so im digging them up , ready or not, so i digs them up and the are all bad, out of maybe 300 i got 10 good plants, they were all affected by cabbage root fly? (this was my conclusion after much tinternetting and reading books) i didnt even know turnip was a brassica!, so in the end , no turnips and stunted sweetcorn where the turnips were! oh well we live and learn, but i dont think i will sacrifice sweetcorn for the price of turnips again!
