  • idiot alert !!!

    hi,
iv'e been growing stuff in my greenhouse in pots quite successfully for a year or two now, this year i planted some garlic, doing really well, the shoots are probably 10" high, problem is i planted them without seeking advice first.
i just planted the bulbs without separating the cloves
my question is, what will happen to them? will there be any point in letting them carry on growing?

You're not an idiot - you're carrying out a scientific experiment to see whether the yield of garlic is increased or decreased by planting the bulbs whole. Just sound convincing and they'll believe you!

I accidently left a whole bulb in the ground last year, and only realised when it had sprouted. I dug it up and separated the plants-they lived, but I didn't get a great yield.

thanks for the replies guys, reckon i'll just leave em and hope for the best then eh?
i do like the idea of telling everyone that i meant to do it for scientific reasons though. i could have used that one last year, and the year before....

My grandad, who was a fabulous gardener, always said "they've got 2 chances, either they'll grow or they wont!" I kind of take after him on this Everything is a learning curve, if it doesn't quite work out this time, try something different the next!
If it comes from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't!!

There is garlic popping up all over our flower bed from cloves planted about 3 years ago. What didn't get big I just left and some places there are little groups. Some turn in to little mini bulbs that aren't split. I doubt you'll get anything much this year, but hopefully there is something you can pull up and use to plant next year.
