I think the first thing I would have at hand is some kind of protection from the dreaded beasties i.e netting or fleece.

i can do that -wrap them ! ( but thats probably the extent of my iceberg lettuce care to date- they always seem to die) where should i site them- sun, part sun, shade, windy (very windy garden so they can have sun +wind, or shade + sheltered!); are they better out or in a cold frame. i am thinking of putting them in a big galvanized wash tub and putting a plastic skirt around it sort of like a mini-polytunnel ????

I tried growing them and they were a disaster. There are so many really tasty varieties of lettuce that I've not bothered with iceberg again. I now tend to grow more cut and come again stuff for the simple reason that if I fancy a few leaves in a lunchtime sandwich I just pull them off and don't have to worry about ending up with a half-eaten week old lettuce.

is there a variety that is like an iceberg? i really like the wet, crunchy type of lettuce! this a.m. the icebergs are looking topsy and feeble- i dont hold out much hope! i have them in a dappled sun- would they be better somewhere else?
