  • I think my florence fennel has bolted

I planted my fennel plants at the end of May & have looked after them to the best of my ability ( which isnt much at the moment). Now i think the things have bolted. The fronds are about 2 ft high maybe a bit more & there doesnt seem to be a great deal of bulb formation. Any advice please.

Mine too, pulled one today the root looked a bit like a small parsnip? So pi$$ed off, I love fennel, looks great above ground but no tasty bulb. Any thoughts as to why? Sown May 4th in a rasied bed, good sun, watering may have been a bit sparse early August when we were away, stumped!

Fennel bulbs are meant to be planted out after the longest day? That's what I was told so mine were only sown at the end of August and now they are in the ground and slowly bulbing up.

A couple of points - if your fennel has long roots that look like a parsnip, are you sure you planted out the Florence Fennel and not the herb Fennel by accident ? The same applies if you have two foot of leafyt top growth and no bulb showing at all.
I lifted the last of my Florence Fennel on Thurday evening and those that are left are now running to seed - they form a thick stem from the centre top of the bulb which shoots up almost overnight.
As mentioned, they do say to plant / sow after the longest day to help delay the plants running to seed but mine were in the ground in June and suffered no ill effects - about ten or so have now bolted from 300 or so planted out.

I think Sewer rat is probably right. I only planted Fennel once, some years ago. It was supposed to be Florence F. but did exactly what is described here. A friend of mine, who teaches horticulture at a very good Ag. college, visited and before I said anything asked why I was growing so much herb fennel. He said this is common in commercial seed packets.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Thinking about this a bit more, is there not some kind of come back against the seed suppliers? As in not what was advertised on the packet????
Where can I get bulb fennel for next year?
