  • I have Hugulkultur ingredients - but what to grow?

I am planning on building some Hugelkultur mounds this spring. I have various logs from oak for structure to dried willow and soft silver birch, bags of fresh manure and old turf. I even have a 14 year old son who is kean to earn extra pocket money

I am planning to build the mounds in an area with heavy clay with the first layer of logs slightly below ground level to help reduce water logging/allow water to rise in mounds.

From what I have read it seems the mounds are a bit warmer in the first year due to decomposing so I am wondering what to plan for planting. I am wondering about some or all of the following:
    Melon Outdoor Wonder
    Aubergines
    Peppers
    Squash/courgettes

and I am going to reserve one mound to try and grow some big pumpkins.

I could really do with some practical advice on what to grow first and second years.

You just grow normal crops don't you? There's nothing magical about hugulkulture mounds, they just help to retain water in the soil

      Yes just grow as usual.

The south facing mounds will be warmer than the north facing, so keep the north facing for lettuces and other cooler crops.

^^^^ What they said. You need to understand micro climate and what plants prefer. Bob Flowerdew talks about it in his companion planting book but I assume there is lots on the net as well.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!
