With courgettes, is it the male or female that gets little fruits behind the flower?

  • #2
As with most animals it's the female who bears fruit............

If it was the male you wouldn't get more than one...........

Flowers can be dipped in batter and deep fried!

How do you take the flowers off? Do you just cut them where they join the fruit? And recipe for the batter if it's not too cheeky?!?

Jings Veggielover, can you tell me any other species where it is the male who bears the offspring If that was the case they would have one and that would be the end of the story You can be assured that your courgettes will come from the female flowers as is the ordinary way of things, and you will get plenty - gluttons for punishment

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

No they wouldn't - the pubs would be full of baby courgettes where the male had left it on the seat.

Is this where I should admit to once leaving number one son in a hardware shop?

No, save that for the therapist.

But courgettes produce both male and female flowers on the same plant.

If you want to eat courgette flowers it is easier to go for the male flowers, I just snip the stalk off a cm or so away from the main stem. You can also cut off the females when they are in flower, with tiny fruits, but that seems like a waste to me.

He sure does, carries hundreds of fertilized eggs in a pouch for the gestation period, while the female, one presumes, goes off shopping for handbags.

As for the batter .... I've just finished a Japanese cookery course and did tempura. Our ethnic japanese teacher said he would recommend buying tempura batter mix from the local chinese/oriental supermarket, unless you want to become a total expert. Tempura batter is quite fiddly to make, not always successful and usually involves ice cubes.

But having read this, I'm definitely going to try courgette flower tempura this summer! Thanks for the idea ...

for a light version, dip almost any sliced vegetable (aubergine really good for this) in milk and then flour, then fry!
