  • I feel like a proper gardener now!

I've filled my compost bin for the first time. I'm not sure how I'm going to fit the lavender prunings or all the tomato and cucumber plants..

Well done Sonata. Give it a few weeks to rot down a little and there will be room for your lavender, tomato and cucumber plants. Now you can look forward to using it in the garden and getting the next lot started off. All that goodness all for free. Brilliant.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

Congrats on filling your first bin Sonat,

I did read here on the vine not to compost tomato plants something to do with spreading disease.

        Only if they have blight

Well done Sonata. It's a god feeling isn't it?

          Yay.
I filled my first one the other day. Just had a knock at the door, it was a guy delivering a second one. And a third should be on the way. The best thing is: I haven't paid a penny for any of them. The council provide one per household free. I ordered my first over a year ago and they've sinced changed suppliers who don't check previous orders. The third is one I ordered on behalf of my next-door neighbour who has a block-paved back garden so won't be needing it. I just had a quixotic moment a couple of weeks ago and ordered them all!

How does that work? It sounds like a riddle!
              I am from the council,
you can put biodegradable waste in me,
              you can't take anything out.
              What am I?

I haven't got space for another *sob*. I do have a wormery on the go and a bokashi too. I should surely be able to harvest some stuff though as it's been going a year?

It is a fab feeling! I was lucky - no blight here, and I've still got some toms (from sideshoots, couldn't bear to bin them so I just bunged them in the ground) doing really well.

It does if you site it, and use it, correctly.
I have 4 Daleks, and love them. Even more exciting than filling one up, is taking the lid off 3 days later and seeing it's only half-full again

What are you putting in it & how long has it been in.

Thanks Andrea I knew I'd read something about tomatoes and composting them but wasn't too sure

Two Sheds I remember being really disappointed the first time I filled my Dalek only for half of it to disappear a couple of days later. Now its a game to see if I can judge it right before lifting the lid for the next lot to go in.

filled both of my daleks this weekend after emptying them last weekend, but I know whemn I lift the lid on saturday the beans ,pumpkins, cucumbers & gherkins I put in will have been reduced to about 1/2 their volume.
I'm almost looking forward to cleaning out the chickens just for the compost.
                        how sad is that?
