  • I don't like broad beans

So I never grow any, however I do like Soy beans but the price for frozen in the shop is a bit ridiculous tbh, is there anything other than late planting out which I should consider?

I've tried soy beans only once, and got zero harvest, so from that limited experience I concluded that you need a greenhouse to grow them in the UK.

If you don't like broad beans, you could try field beans. I'm growing them for the first time this year, so again I'm not an expert, but dried they don't taste like broad beans, though they are closely related. They are grown commercially in the UK, so apparently like the climate here.

We liked the starter dish "Big beans" while in Greece and I found dried beans called Gigantes while in France. We grow those, allow to dry on the plant and keep. Excellent with a bit of home made tom' sauce and crusty bread. Cheers, Tony.

I would try eating the beans with the leather coat removed so that you just eat the sweet, green cotyledons inside. I find the outer coats (not the pods) can get quite tough and bitter. I think you may rediscover broadies if you do. They are great in curries.

No-one here likes them except me, so I grow just a few to experience the sweet taste you've just described Mark.

This is exactly what I do. I always thought I hated broad beans until a few years ago came across a Jamie Oliver recipe to pop them out of their little skins and ever since I have been a huge convert and they are now one of my fave veg.

                  Can't remember ever liking broadies.

Until last year that is, when I grow some for the first time. This year I have 3 variaties, including a red skinned. Only had very limited corps of over beans, so going to try successive sowings and get fresh beans all summer.

I'm happy to eat them in their jackets when they are bigger too.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

The only ones I disrobe are old ones from the freezer. I find it very therapeutic - a quick squeeze of a grey and wizened defrosted bean and out pops a beautiful bright green baby.

Taking the skins off is a right pain, just pick them small and you get the same effect, and sooner

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
