  • I don't know my onions... Does anybody?

    HI all

Bought these form the roadside and not sure if they are onions, shallots, or ???

Can anyone tell me please, and a variety would be great to know as well if possible.

    Many thanks

    Max

They are onions, no idea of the variety.

Agree: onions. No real idea of the variety. That said, they remind me of the big sweet onions we grow here. Overwintered sweet ones are unhelpfully called Blanca y Tierna (White and Tender) in my local nursery. Another similar sweet onion is Fuentes or Dulce de Fuentes (Sweet from Fuentes, seeds on sale from MoreVeg).

You could try replanting the ones with the best roots and hoping that it will grow, flower and set seed..........or you could just eat them

Max, do you normally buy things from the roadside that you have no idea about on a whim? It's just that there's a TV, settee and fridge freezer on the roadside near my sisters if you have the cash.

I thought that might be the case!

Do you think Max was hoping for a sensible answer?

                    Thanks for the replies

Yes, I do often buy unknown fruit and veggies from the roadside. I get quite excited when I see a veg stall and have been known to emergency stop; smoking brakes and all. But only for fruit and veg, so I’ll pass on the TV, settee, fridge freezer, and even kitchen sink if there’s one of those there too.

I'll try them later today and see how I get on.

                    Cheers

Actually there's a double sink on the junk pile at the allotments.

Max, is it feasible to stop at the stall again and ask?
