  • How are your armpits doing?

For those who rooted and repotted their tomato sideshoots (aka 'armpits'), how are they now doing?

Mine haven't gotten up to much, although all have a least one truss of flowers (as yet unopened), they're all very small, i doubt any of them have enough foliage to support fruit growth.

Here are three that were handy (the rest are on the roof of the shed, about a dozen in total...):

I was hoping someone would have replied as I have some around the same size and some much bigger and think when should I just stop and put them on the heap. The other day I took one off that I Didnt notice as it grew from the bottom leaf and it was bigger than the main plant with fruit already. I took it off and now it's in water forming roots. I tend now not to save anything under 9 inches long but even then I wonder is ther any point at this time of year.

Mine have almost caught up with the parents I took them from and have plenty of unripe toms on them.

Mine are nothing like the parent plants, but summer hasn't arrived yet in Paisley, so I figure they have plenty of time to catch up

I'm not giving up yet, though.

I've always found that the 'armpits' don't get as big as the parents (the plant is already 'mature') but still produce some fruit. I didn't bother this year as I'd already sown too many toms in the first place!

My toms are an absolute mess. I have 4 plants in the greenhouse. All grew to 6ft tall. Two of them have produced some fruit ie the baby plums but the black cherry was a complete waste of space so I have pulled them out.
I was feeling quite ashamed of my house. A complete shambles. I was also growing a courgette that was determined to take over all available space with no return so I yanked that out as well.
Returning to armpits well those have also been a waste of time not a flower nor even a sausage. So I am now back to where I started in spring. Empty containers. Visions of harvest but nothing to plant.

I pinched out the growing tip of mine when they reached 3ft. They both have 3 trusses of flowers and one has toms on it.
They are both healthier plants than the parents (mould growing on them --- thread has been opened for help).

Looks like a mixed bag of results.

What's the deadline for flowers opening in order to allow enough time for subsequent tomatoes to ripen?
