  • how much light is necessary for growing?

I wanted to tag this onto some other posts, but can't find them due to techy probs on the Vine right now

I took this photo for school, to show them how important light is to growing plants, and not just warmth. We're often asked on here whether plants can grow in shade, or semi-shade, and we usually say "full sun is best for veg".

These French beans were planted at the same time, indoors in March. The bigger one had a south-facing windowsill, the half-size one had an east-facing windowsill

I've found that this year, even with the incredibly warm weather we had last month, that the modules in my blowaway that were on the lower shelfs have done very poorly/not germinated in contrast to those on the upper shelves. Crop rotation within the blowaway in full operation now!

Do you think the diffused light through Polycarbonate is inferior to plain glass to any noticeable extent?

polycarb will diffuse the light more than clear glass, but don't forget that in high summer we all put shading on our glass houses anyway, cos they get too hot!
