  • How much do your lettuce weigh?

Just out of interest I weighed a part-used lettuce the other day and was quite surprised that it was just over a pound (I refuse to do metric) which means it probably weighed nearer 1 1/2lb when picked - which has to be several times heavier than anything from the supermarket.

It was a butterhead, May Queen.

Has anybody else ever weighed a lettuce, of any variety? If so, what's the usual sort of weight of, say, Cos-type, Butterheads and so on?

Never had the inclination to weigh a lettuce although some of the crispy varieties do grow to be a fair size. Interesting that some of us are growing the cut and come again varieties.

I grow cut and come again and heading lettuces; but still just pick the leaves off when I want them....or just slice a load off and leave the rest of the plant to grow on.

I don't get to the full size stage as the sparrows graze it like a herd of wildebeest.

I have a lettuce lawn. Very neat but not very heavy.

            Fat sparrows.

Cut and come again +1. Seems a waste to grow them to full size.

I always grow CACA, but I would like to grow iceberg as it's the only lettuce Himself will eat, might have a go.

I've got 3 little gems which are *huge*. They're beginning to head up now, and one of them has two "heads". I've been picking off the outer leaves to eat, but I'll cut one when we're finished the current salad and weight it to see

We're also growing loads and loads of salad leaves, but it's nice to have a whole lettuce as well. I think they look good in the garden too.

To be honest I've 'never had the inclination' to weigh anything before either, but I'd seen how much salad leaves cost, and wondered if we could work out roughly how much that particular lettuce might have cost in a shop. Couldn't do it because none of the whole lettuce are sold by weight. (On the continent you pay so much per kilo)

In our horrible supermarket 90g bags of salad leaves (that's just over 3 oz = 1/4 of a lettuce) cost £1

Tiny little Little Gems are about 90p for two - much smaller than the ones in our garden that we don't think are big enough to eat. The taste just doesn't compare either.
