  • How many spuds to expect????

I've grown some swift potatos in bags( the usual size "grow bag" from the seed companies). I've had a root around, gone about 12 inches down into the bag, and i've managed to get around 1 1/2 pounds of spuds from the 1st bag, which had 5 tubers sown into it. How many spuds can I expect from bag as I dont know if to go deeper down into the bag as I dont want to upset anything growing. The spuds I picked are definetly ready as they are the size of a large hens egg.

They were planted in the 1st few days of march. I've got 3 bags with swift, maris peer and charlotte in. The charlotte have flowered. Also they've been inside the greenhouse except for the last 2- 3 weeks.

I've got Charlotte, International kidney ( jersey royal) and Arran pilot in sacks. I have no idea when I shall be able to harvest them! No sign of flowering yet! The Charlotte and Arran Pilot are growing well in the garden. No sign of the Pink Fir Apple yet. I'll leave them all till they flower.

              shouldn't you harvest before flowering?
if they are flowering doesn't that mean they are using up their stored energ... i.e. YOUR TATTIES??!!?

Your potatoes are normally ready when the flowers have died off. If you want the the plant to put all its energy in to the potatoes then nip the flowers off and that should increase the size of tubers. The only way I can decide when potatoes are ready is to have a furtle or to pull a shaw out in the field.

I can never get the yields in buckets and bags that I get out on the lottie, probably because the bags don't get the same amount of sunshine. I have used all the bag grown ones up now and only got, at most, a couple of pounds of spuds out of each bag. Not that I'm complaining as I still think it is worth the effort. The ones out on the lottie will only be about 4/5 weeks now before they are ready. Once again I will start harvesting when I can get a few spuds from a root. (only two of us to feed and I have over 100 tuber planted)

well i planted my tatties out on st patricks day march 17th so the first earlies should be getting ready by about the end of the month for me - that's about 10 weeks if I recall for first earlies
about 13 weeks for second earlies...

also, my tattie plants int eh bags have received a tonne of sunshine and are growing like lunatics, so maybe the yield will be ok - who knows!?

Pink fir apple is a maincrop. You'll do much better if you leave them in till September.

Before I got this allotment the previous owner was an Italian obsessed with potatoes.

According to older plot holders, the soil was loving tended but covered in clamps over winter

Guess what pops up everywhere on the allotment - I expect a good harvest wether I've planted it or not
