  • How many seeds to I put in to the soil?

Today I am going to sow the following:

Carrots (Chanteany red cored 2/Early nates 5)
    Spinache Beet
    Cucumber
    Lettuce (Webbs Wonderful/Little Gem)
    Cauliflower

Becuase there is quite a number of seeds in each pack do I sow a few seeds in every hole or is it just one each?

spinach beet and lettuce germinate wonderfully so i only plant 1 per cell.

Cauli I plant 2 or 3 and nip out the weakest.

Carrots I sow thin in rows where they are to crop so stop me thinning them so much.

I've never grown cukes before as i dont have a greenhouse yet. (If your worried i would sow 2/3 per cell and nip out any extras)

I'll be reading this forum for tips solidly for the get 24hrs, Di!

Do cukes have to go in a GH then as I will be sowing everything direct in the ground?

HEY! You might be right but at least my interview is before his! Ha ha!

I know there are varieties of cucumber that do ok in our climate but I've only seen decent ones grown in a greenhouse. They climb quite tall and the ones i've seen have had crazy foliage.
I might have a bash at growing them myself if i get my greenhouse in time!
Let us know how you get on.

I only have mini greenhouses so I have always grown my cuces outside in pots and they have done well. As long as you pick the right variety, you should be okay. I only sow one cucumber seed per module as the germination rate, for me, has been quite good. You will need to sow them indoors in a propagotor as they need warmth to germinate.

Marketmore Cucumbers grow fine outdoors.I pop just one seed per pot, started off in the plastic greenhouse.Although you can sow direct outdoors insitu, but I'd wait a few weeks before planting them outdoors & then a couple of seeds per hole, nipping out or transplanting the weaker one.
BTW,Cauli's I sow a pinch per pot & then transplant them when they are strong enough. This year I'll do a few every couple of weeks, hoping for a continual crop...previous years I've sown them all at the same time, therefore having far too many to eat,all ready at the same time & most going to waste.

Don't sow the cucs direct in the ground, they'll not germinate at this time of year and probably rot. Start them off inside in pots and then gradually pot on and aclimatise for outside - just make sure it's an outside variety and you'll be fine

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've never found that successional sowing works - they all just catch up. Instead I've started growing gherkins, you can pick them small and frequently, rather than suddenly having twenty full sized cucmbers.

I think andi&di was talking about caulis. I'm doing the same with caulis, sowing a few every few weeks. So far I have 3 lots on the go!

As for cukes, I grew Konsa last year (outdoors) and did not find there were more than one or two per plant at any one time. We would pick one and another would grow. Worked out very well until the dreaded mildew struck. Not sure if it was beginner's luck, or maybe it is to do with the variety? This year we are growing Konsa again and another variety whose name I can't remember which came from Real seeds.
Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.
