i would like to grow some carrots and parsnips in some old galvanized buckets, about 12" across and 12"deep. but i am confused as to how many carrots or parsnips can be grown in each bucket? also, is it a good idea to mix compost with some sand to make it a lighter soil, or will just compost do? thanks for your help.

I'd mix it with sand for carrots and parsnips.
TBH, I've no idea how parsnips would get on in 12" of compost, I would get some of those flower buckets, cut the bottom out of one and stick it on top of the soil of another pot. That should give them a better chance.
You might get 4 per pot, experiment.
Carrots, thickly sow and thin to the suggested distances. I normally do mine to about an inch and a half or something in 12" pots."Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"

Thing is to image how big they be will when fully grown, that way you don't have to bother with thinning because that only attracts carrot fly.Location....East Midlands.Comment

I'm also doing carrots and parsnips in tubs and used a mixture of compost and sand. I sowed the seed thinly but will probably still need to thin them out as and when necessary.pjh75

7 parsnips sounds good but only 12" depth doesn't. Carrots probably start with a hundred and use as soon as big enough.

Was my first attempt at growing them. Just used cheap compost mixed with dry fine riddled soil.
I have 5 buckets on the go at the moment, same process.Comment

I've grown snips in flower tubs for a couple of years and you can easily get 7 if you don't want whoppers. I sow 12/14 per tub and thin if they all germinate....and they usually do
My growing medium is MPC with added sifted soil, sharp sand a little BFB. They seem to like it.Comment
