  • How high is enough?

Ok a neighbour is having an extension built meaning loads of spare old bricks and they said I can have them. So I'm going tome build raised beds with them. My question is this is there a specific hight people go with them? I don't want a shallow bed just curious.

Any pictures to give me ideas and to compare?

    Cheers Bill

I've moved your thread for you Bill - the Growing Techniques board is just an archive and your post won't show in there.

Will your beds be going on top of soil, or concrete? That makes a difference on the height needed - whether things can root below the the bottom of the bed or not.

Whatever height you make them, you're going to want to fill with soil: cost is a major factor here, with topsoil being *about* £100 a ton (which fills one of those big one metre cubed baggy thingies)

mine are about a foot deep, and filled in autumn with compost then topped up with topsoil and compost from the darleks. they were built on existing land that was clay in texture and had bad drainage.
