  • How do you use your tools

OK - so a week ago (might have been two weeks) I planted out some early lettuce seedlings simply to get them out onto the plot.

Today I realised that they were in the wrong bed for my overall “plan”
so wanting to move them but not wanting to disturb them again, I used my Bulb Planter.

First made a hole with the planter where each seedling needed to be in the new bed.
Then used the planter to lift the seedlings soil and all, dropping them into the new hole.

"Simples!" - they didn't even know they'd been moved.

So it got me wondering as to how many tools are designed for one thing but end up being used for other things ......... could be an interesting thread

PS Anyone got a copy of this fantastic “Hazels spreadsheet” I have read about would really like to have a look.
Remember If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

I have a ridger which was worth the money. It drags my trenches, pulls the earth back again and earths up. A brilliant tool. Like your bulb planter, seedling mover thing going on - quite ingenious Mr Fairchild!!!

I use a bulb planter (the sort with a long handle, than you stamp on! not a flimsy hand-tool version) to plant all the things I have grown in 3" pots. I have mild arthritis in my hands, and heavy clay soil, and planting 100 x 3" pots out using a trowel used to give me severe hand-pain. The bulb-planter has solved that plus I can make mega-deep holes to prepare for Parsnips.

My bulb planter [actually, planters as I have 3] get used for pretty much everything as when I grow in modules, they fit nicely in a bulb planter hole. Also good for harvesting garlic. And planting out leeks.
