    About a foot should do, line the bottom with multiple layers of wet newspaper to retain moisture

        I never have, but am thinking of trying it - to get more "moisture holding material" at the roots of the bean plants, rather than just incorporating organic material [into the whole bed in general]

        Perhaps I should just try half-the-row so I can see how it compares

          My best version of the trench was using the contents of a dalek, well rotted: I just raked the heap level and planted the beans into that: the moisture retention was terrific and the yield very good
