  • How deep for beetroot, carrots, potatoes?

I'm growing beetroots, carrots and potatoes in pots this year (limited ground space being taken up by leeks, onions, sprouts and lettuce {intercropping} and swede) but am not sure how deep the pots need to be. Would pots around 12" deep be deep enough?

They'll be fine for beetroot and carrots but i doubt you'll get many potatoes from that. I've been using empty compost bags for my potatoes.

Yep 12" is more than enough for Beets and Carrots.

We have never grown Patatoes so we can't advise on them.

Our kids grew Carrots in pots last year. The pots were only 9" deep and they grew very well.

Thanks for the replies. Okay, 12" not deep enough for potatoes. How deep should it be then?

          How wide are the pots?
I've recently planted my first "Grow in a bag" spuds...only ever grown in the ground before...the bags provided can't be much more than 12" deep/high,but probably at least 10" wide...maybe actually closer to a foot?We only planted one spud per bag.(it's an experiment the school are doing,so will keep an eye on the results, but I'm sure the organisers of it wouldn't provide bags that aren't big enough.)

I would have thought 12" deep pot would be OK for a potato as this is more or less bucket sized (assuming it was 12" or so diameter as well) - others on here have planted potatoes one per bucket or one per supermarket-flower-container and reported good results, albeit with a smaller crop. Worth a try?
