  • How big do drawf French beans get?

I've got some builder's buckets that are 12 inches wide and about the same deep. Is it best to grow one or two (or more?) plants in per pot?

    Thanks for any advice!

    I'd put 3 ...4 at a push in there.

well i was looking in my book (RHS allotment handbook) last night regarding dwarf french beans and it said it recommended them to be 4 inch's apart (not 6 inch's like other book's recommend) as placing them at 4 inches apart they support each other - so no need for staking

But that's in a row - in a block you can get much more in - particularly if they can hang off the side like in a pot. I'd be putting about 9-10 in that space, in a pot.

Really?- gosh- more than I imagined! ( you can tell I don't plant in pots can't you!!!!! )
I was thinking mainly of the watering aspect.

When I used to grow only in pots I'd sow 10 to a bucket and always got a good crop.

So if growing in blocks is so much more efficient, why on earth do we all continue to plant in rows...??

                  Some of us don't!

..depends on what I'm planting but we usually use the domino staggered planting.
You just need enough room to squeeze in to pick without damaging the plants.
(Thing like carrots and p******s are easier to identify when young when it's weeding time if they are in rows.)

Builders buckets are a lot bigger than Morrison flower pots.

See the pic - you can get 3 times as many in the same area. Good innit!

I have no idea why people grow in rows; I've never done it and hopefully never will!

i got a really excellent poster at the garden organic stand at the edible garden show that had suggested spacings for planting in raised beds rather than traditional rows (which I guess is like blocks)
Unfortunately I can't find it now... (suspected recycling error)... does anyone know if this is (or similar)on a website somewhere???

I think grow in row is only for big farm that grow maybe million of plants and rows are easy to harvest with machines plus look after as well.
Now I was wondering is borlotti beans a french beans or runner beans? I love them

                              They're Frenchies

Wiki, this and this link have them listed under the huge umbrella that is (phaseolus vulgaris) 'common bean'

                              Runner bean is phaseolus coccineus
