How big do chillies grow under a grow light?

When are you thinking of sowing them Mic.
You dont want them to get too leggy under the lights.

hi ,what sort of lights are you going to use ? i tried to grow some this year in hydroponics under 125 whatt cfl lamps (posted some pics in the main chilli thread) and they were doing really well (about 3 times the size of my chillis in pots ,sown at the same time) but i got an aphid infection and i had to throw them away ,cheers

Well size is important, no point in sowing today if they'll fill the box by January
No rush but it's in my head so sooner the better

You need to factor in varieties too.....not all chillies grow the same. What are you growing? It's much too early ......read the chilli and overwintering thread. You'll learn a lot.

Why don't you start now and see what happens. If it doesn't work, sow some more at the recommended time. The best way to find out is by doing it yourself.

Bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question, as it will depend on many things, but I like your enthusiasm

Strength of light source, temperatures etc. Even indoors, some houses/rooms drop down to much lower temperatures overnight than others.

And some varieties grow much quicker than others, even in the same conditions. Some are bushy and will only reach a maximum height of less than a foot as fully mature plants, others would grow to 3-4ft tall if not pinched out at the top.

Germination timescales will also have an effect, and could take days or weeks depending on whether you have a heated propagator?

But chillies actually are perennials, even if they're typically grown as annuals in the UK. So in theory you could grow year round in the right conditions if you could create them.

Interesting they did so well. Sorry about aphid infestation, it's always a nuisance. Could you not get aphids under control to save the plants?

Not sure which seeds. I'll test on the eBay bought reaper seeds as a trial before using seeds from a known source.
Might even ask santa for a grow tent.

no chris11 they took hold and multiplied really fast ,quiet interesting they covered the plants and made them really sticky to the touch ,laid eggs under all the leafs and even cleaning the leafs twice a day and spraying with a washing up liquid/water mix didnt slow them down ,i even went out and collected ladybirds and put them on the plants to eat them but they got full up very fast and flew away ,i have a few ideas on what i did wrong so ive fitted a fan (lost my last one in the house move) and have a few other thing im mulling over for next years grow ,overall i really like the way the plants were growing and was impressed with the growth ,cheers
