    hosepipe ban.

    Apparently there is to be a hosepipe ban for millions in the North West unless it pours down next week.

    Do you think it is appropriate to fill up my barrel now, using the hosepipe? It is only about 1/2 full at the moment.

    Is this ethical, appropriate to environmentally friendly gardening, honourable?

    What happens if you're caught using a hosepipe?

      I can't say whether it's ethical, honourable or appropiate, but I say fill it up! You're going to be using the water anyway, whether you fill buckets from the sink or use the water butt, it'll just save you time and effort.

      Plus, it gives the water a chance to get to garden temperature without you waiting after each filling of the watering can.

      I filled mine up last week...

        Cross-post, but I assumed you'd be filling up your water butt BEFORE the ban comes into place? I assumed this because of the 'now' and the fact that there 'is to be' a ban. Sorry if I'm wrong.

          yes the ban is only proposed at the moment, and wont happen if we get a deluge next week, and i am free to use a hosepipe now if i choose to.

                good idea, but i would probably still get caught knowing my luck.

                the plot is surrounded by houses, can be seen from the bedrooms, and the people round here keep odd hours.
                On the plus side, they are not generally the types to go reporting minor mischiefs to the authorities.

                    I'd have thought food production wouldn't get the same 'punishment' as for lawns and flowers- well it certainly shouldn't be.

                    Do be aware that the water will be diverted from Windermere- which is already low....goodness knows what effect that will have on the local environment.

                        I agree, but you know what bureaucrats are like.

                        If it comes from Windermere, how does it get there? Do they have a system of tubes and pipes and gulleys underground?

                        I was always under the impression that Liverpool's water came from Lake Vernwy in Wales, not Rivington.

                          Hmm..you may well be right- and Windermere serves Manchester?
                          I be it'll be similar re hosepipe bans there too soon.

                          Anyone know much about this water diversion????
