hollow radish

i seem to have the odd hollow radish.. only the french breakfast ones. any idea why?

also can i grow my onions and also garlicc in shallow trays? ive planted seeds in them, see Gardening on a budget for the pic of the trays full and empty.

I like to give my main crop onions no less than 6" of soil, maybe more for garlic.
