  • Holes in my spuds

    Help!

I have just finished digging up the last of my spuds (Sentanta) and a lot of them have holes in them. Some have large caves eaten in to them, other just small circular holes. I did not have this problem with either the Pentland Javlines or Kestrels

I have three question which I am sure a grape or two will be able to answer.

    1, What attacked the spuds?
2, Can the one with only a few small holes be used?
3, If they can be used, will the store?

    Thanks, in advance

    Slug holes

Cut out the holes (that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean) and eat as normal

No, they won't store, because the flesh is damaged and rot can enter

I'd be happy to eat those too- just don't store them.

All as above plus something like Nemaslug treatment next year.

The longer you leave your slugs in the ground at this time of year, the more risk there is of damage by slugs, as pots suggests, you can remedy this by using slug nematodes for the future. The nematodes are watered on at earthing up time so easy to use, just a tad expensive but still worth the money

              Make chips and freeze!

I had the same holes in my spuds. I thought it might be wireworm but i'm inclined to think Two Sheds might be right. Thanks Two Sheds, i'll forget about the mustard and think of something to keep those slimey gits at bay.

Well, the tattie I microwaved that was like that recently had a slug in the hole, just out of sight. I thought I had cleaned out the hole...
