  • Hole in tomato

My tomatoes are coming on nice, but I have noticed that two or three of them have 2-3mm holes that go straight in.

Anyone have any ideas what could cause this? The tomatoes are still green. Is it something eating (though it seems too 'straight in' for slugs etc), or has something laid eggs in them??

    Many thanks

yups, a fgew pics might help with a diagnosis but so might a post mortem on one of the tomatoes with a hole. If you slice through the hole you may find the culprit.

Remove infected fruit and carefully slice to reveal invader, you should find a large green or brown caterpillar indicates tomato moth.

If so remove all infected fruit and if your not organic spray rest with permethrin. Sorry don't know the organic eqvialent.

Many thank for all replies. I shall endeavor to get some pics up tomorrow (bit dark now). Although not strictly organic, I am intensely attempting not to kill ladybirds and spiders which keep away the greenfly and mosquitoes (ala "If it's not an invasion, let it run its course, if it is an invasion, spray the **** out of it" ;-) ). So I will take photos and cut the 'holed' ones and see what's up and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this!

Ps; 1st year with an actual garden - please bear with me! :-)

OK; forum back up and photos done. Here is a photo of the inside, the previous few photos show it i context. I cannot see anything inside unless it's really-really small!
