  • Highly recommended Broad Bean

Just wanted to recommend Marshall's Jade Broad Bean - exclusive to them.
I was about to give up on broad beans, I want them to freeze and the other varieties were very disappointing. Marshall's say in their blurb that these were good for freezing and they are so right, really good flavour and they stay bright green, no sad watery, tasteless grey beans from Jade! I 've picked them small, just picked a third carrier bag full and still more to come. I've got 16 plants in a one metre square raised bed and they were module grown to help them withstand the slugs, they got a bit of fleece protection till worst of the frosts over and after that, no attention whatsover.

And I don't know if this is a happy accident but not one single black fly... I have a cherry tree just 10foot away that has been infested with black fly but they haven't marched over to my broad bean bed at all, and I forgot to pinch the tips out... I did have two plants left over and they got bunged in another raised bed and no blackfly on them either.

So Jade is going to be "my" broad bean from now on and come next Feb at least two raised beds worth will be sown on my allotment.

    best wishes
    Sue

Nice to hear a recommendation, thanks for sharing that.

How tall do the plants get? Do you think they can they be grown in, say... a 12" container?

The Marshalls web site isn't very detailed - it just says "Upright pods are produced on stocky plants in July". Does it say on the packet how tall they get?

What colour flowers and how high do they grow?

        Hi
They've got the usual black and white flowers and they grow to about er... 3ft I think, perhaps 4 foot.
