  • Hero cabbage advice needed

    Hi i will be planting some Hero cabbage seeds in small peat pots in a few weeks time
    the advice i need is when i am ready to plant these out at the end of August into my raised beds to over winter do i need to protect them from frost or do i plant and forget about them till next spring.

    I would put hay under them so the leaves don't touch the ground & fleece over that should be all they need just a little tlc from the harsh elements.

    Ive dont this with all my Brassicas past 2 and done well

      I grown spring cabbage Hero for several years now. The only precaution I take is to make sure the are planted very firmly to prevent frost getting down the stem.

      I have seen them covered with snow but they always seem to bounce back. Nice tasting and make great spring greens. I seem to remember someone telling me a frost improves the taste.

          Thanks to all for your replies my wife has just came in from the town and gave me a packet of all year round cauliflower so i will plant some of them to over winter as well and as tbm 86 say,s i will put fleece over them before the frost comes
