There is one term that tops the lot and is so frequently forgotten. That term is "where do I live in the UK?".

Without that one vital piece of information no gardening book can answer so many questions. When do I sow radish seeds, when am i likely to harvest tomatoes, when should I transplant leeks etc. etc.

The gardener in Bournemouth has a truly different perspective to those questions compared to a similar gardener in Harrogate!

There are a couple of websites which take location into account and my suggestion is to search them out. Without an answer to that vital question of where you live, the information given for more than half of you will either be incorrect or so glib as to be meaningless.

Something can only be forgotten if the implications are known. It's not just Gardening books that err in that respect. Many packeted seeds have instructions for "middle England" and of course the seed companies' markets don't stop at Harrogate or even up here in Aberdeen.

That is the reason we ask new grapes to make sure they add their location to their profile. We have members based all over the country and this really helps when giving advice.

Ahhh. I think this poster has access to seed packets marked in "zones"

although you could try "new England" & then go a bit further south

If know a person season length, fall first frost date and last spring frost helps answer a person question. then the zone chart system since most zone chart are irrelevant to veg gardening since they are based on max summer and min winter temperatures.

day length is very important with certain crops such lettuces and onions
