Help poorly garlic

    Help poorly garlic

    Hi peeps I hope sombody acn help. I'm new to growing. I put my garlic in in Nov as I was told (purple white from Dobies). It's been doing fine until now. 2 have died and a frew more are going the same way. turning yellow and looking poorly . No sign of any meldew or anything that I cna fine in my books.

    I've attached a few pics if that helps.

    It could be basal rot or white rot. Both are soil borne and there's not much you can do about it.

      Is that fresh manure I can see scattered around on top of the soil ?


      I'm far from an expert on garlic but plants in general want to survive and grow so don't give up on them yet. Although garlic is hardy the new, young soft green growth in spring is suceptible to frost and sunburn; these leaves may die but the plant goes on living and will put out new leaves when the weather is better.

        The central leaves look nice and green and healthy. The bottom plant looks as if there is a little bit of rust on one of the leaves but that would not normally kill the plant. Just snip of the bits of leaves that don't look to good. The two that died, what did they look like, did they have any roots, was there any rot anywhere, what did the leaves look like any grey blotchy bit etc. Hope the rest survives and good luck.

          More important than what you have left, what do the ones look like that died, if you pulled them up, do they have white fluffy growth on them?
          If they do that's white rot.

            THanks peeps I'll dig up the bulbs of the dead ones tonight and have a look.

              I dug up the dead ones tonight. Theres no white fluffy stuff to be seen. they don't look too bad but are bit soft and some of the roots are red. One really stinks. I'll try and get some pics up soon.

                      Been doing some reading and searching. Could it be pink root ?

                      Anybody know anything about it ??

                      Seems it can be as bad as white rot

                        I'm not an expert but I have my own opinion but I will keep it to myself (sorry if that sounds pretentious but I really am not sure and don't want to say something if I'm way off track).


                        Let me ask some questions first....

                        How deep did you plant the cloves? Too deep is bad.

                        Do you water them? Too much water is bad.

                        Is the soil very heavy and water retentive? Not good for garlic.

                        Did the problem become apparent as the soil temperature went up? Attacks happen as temperature rises.

                        Is there lots of ventilation around them? Ventilation is good.

                        Have onions or garlic been grown in that ground in the last two years? Not a good idea.

                        Do you have a downer on using fungicide? Could help but not necessarily so.

                        Have you used fresh manure near them? Not good.



                        Bottom line is I think you will just have to wait and see how the others do unless you want to go down the fungicide route and even that may not prevent some others succumbing.


                        Sorry mate, gardening has its disappointments as well as its successes. But I think you may still get a crop though, so fingers crossed.

                          Mine are also looking rather naff with brown foliage and some are just plain droopy but as they are in I may as well leave them and see how they go...got nothing else to go in the odd spots in which I've planted them.
