Grow Your Own Magazine

Hi, I'm fairly new to this forum, so I'm not sure whether this is the right place to put this thread, mods feel free to move it somewhere else if need be!

My kids go to the local primary school which has a small veg area of raised beds that the children manage in their gardening club at which I'm a helper. We've recently raised the idea with the head teacher of expanding the project into something a bit more ambitious. Hopefully we'd like to grow more produce, create a more wildlife friendly environment and also include some livestock, the most likely contenders so far being chickens and beehives. The schools logo is a bee, so it seemed a great way to keep the project financially self sufficient for the children to sell the school honey to the local community. The head is really behind the idea, but I need to write up a plan of action... and I'll be responsible for pushing the project forward...Gulp...

I'd love to hear from anybody who has set up anything similar at their school or within their community, especially beekeepers and poultry keepers in the Nottingham area who could give us a bit of advice. If anybody could point me in the right direction as to where we could find funding to support us that would also be really appreciated.

Those of us involved in the project have a fair amount of veg growing experience between us, but are aware that many of the children (and parents) have no idea how to produce their own food sustainably and locally, a skill that we feel the next generation should be taught in these uncertain times of rising oil and food costs.
And it lets the kids have a bit of fun instead of being stuck inside a classroom all day

I dunno how things stand as regards Health and Safety all I know is that when I was at school we had our own hives and made our own honey.Well me and the teacher any way cos all the other kids thought it was old mens stuff!
