  • Help me catch the critter!

    Hi again,

Last weekend I planeted out some Kohl Rabi, which have been settling in nicely. Then this morning I planted out some savoys and a couple of cauliflowers (both about 3/4 inches tall).

Now this afternoon I went to water some stuff and the savoys and cauli's leaves have been eaten (with a few half leaves on the ground), but it looks like the little beast took a few bites of the kohl rabi and decided to go home!! (perhaps thats why they're still there now and have lasted since the weekend).

Anybody any ideas (slugs, rabbits, anything else). Will try to get some pics up if I can work it out. Prob won't help much cos its just a seedling stalk with no leaves now.

    Thanks.

Usually slugs & snails. I doubt if rabbits would've left anything behind.

Try a slug hunt in the dark, with head torch and bucket of salty water (I got 53 the other night)

That could be pigeon damage - did the leaves look like they have been pecked?
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

You need to make your pics small (I use resizr.com) and then you add them using Go Advanced and click on the paperclip icon

You can see a bit of the leaf on the ground.

Agree its probably not rabbits, and probably is slugs.

Cheers - will get onto that. I'm suprised by that though cos my caulis and savoys have been out in trays all day every day for the last 2 weeks (gh at night), and they've been fine.

Will sort out some netting tomo, as I'm getting married on Friday and away on honeymoon after.

As an after thought.......are pigoens likely to have a go at other crops in my plot.......currentseedlings are; Peas, PSB, carrots, srawbs, parsnips, brussels, runner/broad/french beans?

Also is there any hope for my massacred brassicas? Or should they get a one way ticket to the compost bin?

If they haven't pecked the growing point out they'll keep on growing. This happened to us the first year before we got clever and netted stuff. They mainly like brassica stuff so net your psb and brussels as well , and they might have a go at your peas .....

They will certainly have a go at your peas. I had some greenhouse started peas in containers which I left out overnight and they were completely stripped of leaves in the morning. My own fault, I know but I just forgot after being so careful to cover my brassicas.

It was dark. And cold. And very, very empty.

And in the middle of all of the dark, cold, emptiness lay something darker, and colder, but very, very full.

They'll eat all your brassicas at every stage of growth (which you need to net against butterflies too). They don't go for beans or anything else
