  • Help I need a bean expert

I've had no end of problems with beans this year. The latest is my climbing french beans. Can anyone please tell me what has caused this to the leaves and how can I remedy it.

Sorry Binley, no idea what caused the damage. How many of the leaves are affected>

Its the ones further up the beanpoles, the lower leaves seem to be ok. They've probably grown up about 2-3 feet. I can't see any bugs like blackfly on them.

Yes but the spuds have been fine, the mange tout are growing well , I've got cucs that are flowering . Garlic has been brill so I think if it was manure probs other stuff would be affected surely?

Sorry - I've never seen anything like it; until my bean leaves shrivelled up that is [with Aminopyralid problems as you know]. But even mine aren't that bad....they've just not grown properly at all.

Oh no I was pinning my hopes on you being in the know! DC suggested on the chat thread that they looked like they'd been sprayed with roundup but we don't use it . Our lottie has a thick high hedge and a padlocked gate (that hasn't been broken), so can't see that anyone could have had a go at them with a spray. Unless of course that one eared meece is clever than I gave it credit for..........

It might be worth emailing RHS; saying that you are trying to find out a cause; have a looksie on their pests and diseases section [I'm sure there is one] and see if anything is similar.

I am no expert but my first thought was it looks like the dock leaves I sprayed with roundup

Binley I've got some runner beans that have gone the same way and I haven't a clue what's caused it, one side of my bean arch is growing fine but the other half are like your bean's. I have mixed bean's in so it's not just one variety...it's as if they've just ran out of steam...very puzzling in deed.

I've sent RHS an e-mail , bit cheeky cos I think its for members (but I do get their newsletter each month). Couldn't find a pests and diseases section tho'. I wonder if it would help picking off said leaves and giving them a seaweed feed?

Do your beans leaves look like they're blistered? Well it can't be my manure then or a meece on a mission of revenge. Lets see if RHS get back to me ...

                          I've just been browsing it:
Royal Horticultural Society | Advice Search | Search

scroll the green column down to "Problems" and then the red column will display "Pest", "Disease" and "Disorder", or you can just click the 197 problems in the yellow column.

TBH, it's not ideal as it requires you to know the name of the problem first rather than the symptoms.

The only reference to bubble leaf problems is Pepino Mosaic Virus on toms; but the DEFRA website link didn't work......I am off to bed so you might want to have a look and see if it affects beans at all....
